Breast Lift
A breast lift offers a way to restore or refine the shape of the breasts and enhance their overall appearance. A breast lift does not increase the size of the breasts. Instead, the procedure focuses on repositioning the breast tissues and reshaping them to suit the aesthetic needs of the patient.
There are a variety of reasons why someone may be interested in receiving a breast lift. Plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Victor Liu takes the time to understand each individual patient’s unique reasons for wanting surgery, as well as their ideal results. This allows him to provide results that satisfy their aesthetic needs.
What Is a Breast Lift?
A simple breast lift, which is also referred to as a mastopexy, is a relatively simple procedure. Basically, it involves the removal of extra skin around the breast to tighten the area and move the breast into a higher position.
There are many reasons why a woman may consider having a breast lift. Breasts are mainly made of fat and many things take a toll on their shape and form. For example, things like breastfeeding, various weight changes, aging and even gravity can all affect the shape and position of our breasts.
Some of the most common issues are noticeable breast sagging, loss of shape, loss of perkiness, downward-pointing nipples, asymmetry, accumulation of excess skin, and wrinkling or folding skin.
It is for that reason that Dr. Liu specializes in breast lifts in the San Francisco Bay area and ensures that his patients get the perfect shape and look that they desire.
Breast lifts now are more common than breast implants, outpacing that procedure by two to one. Many women are on the fence about getting breast implants; especially those that already have a size that they are comfortable with. However, they may not feel confident about the position that their breasts are in. For this reason, breast lifts are becoming more and more popular.
How a Breast Lift Is Performed
A breast lift is an outpatient procedure typically performed under general anesthesia. The incision type used will be discussed during your consultation based on your ideal results and the amount of correction needed.
Excess skin is removed, and the remaining skin is lifted and reshaped to have a rounder appearance with a natural slope. The areolae may be resized or repositioned as needed. The incisions are then carefully sutured shut.
Recovering from a Breast Lift
Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common but should dissipate over the next few days. Medication can be provided to help manage discomfort. Some individuals may experience tightness around the chest during the recovery process.
A compression garment will be provided and must be worn during the initial part of the recovery period. This compression garment will provide additional support and help to manage the swelling.
It will take around two to three weeks of recovery before you are able to return to a majority of your normal activities. Swelling may last for up to six weeks. It is important to note that heavy lifting, exercise, and other strenuous activities will need to be avoided for around six weeks.
